This course is designed for our Jr. High students to begin exploring the language and cultures of both the Spanish and French-speaking worlds, developing basic communication skills and learning about the geography, customs, and traditions of each so students can make an informed decision about which language to pursue in high school.
In French I, students begin to build proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language, acquiring cultural and geographical information about the Francophone regions of the world while learning basic grammar and common expressions.
Students continue to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, building vocabulary resources and delving deeper into grammar and verb tenses. Successful completion of French I with a minimum C average is a prerequisite of this class.
Students begin to transition from the novice to the intermediate level of language acquisition, developing culturally authentic communicative and written skills and an introduction to French literature. Successful completion of French II with a minimum C average is a prerequisite of this class.
Students expand upon previously studied grammar concepts in preparation for advanced structures, idiomatic expressions, and usage, analyzing and discussing novels and completing projects on French culture and civilization. Successful completion of French III with a minimum C average and department chair approval are prerequisites of this class.
Students begin to build proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language, acquiring cultural and geographical information pertaining to Spanish-speaking regions of the world.
Students continue to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, building vocabulary resources through thematic presentation and daily practice. Successful completion of Spanish I is a prerequisite of this class.
Students begin to transition from the novice to the intermediate level of language acquisition, building vocabulary towards describing abstract topics and moving into the imperative and subjunctive moods. Prerequisites include successful completion of Spanish II, teacher recommendation, and department chair approval.
Students explore literary, historical, and social themes through authentic texts, print media, internet resources, film clips, and music, with an introduction to persuasive writing. Prerequisites include successful completion of Spanish III, teacher recommendation, and department chair approval.
For students who have successfully completed Spanish IV and seek to continue exploring current world themes to develop their language skills without taking the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam. Prerequisites include successful completion of Spanish IV, teacher recommendation, and department chair approval.
This College Board Advanced Placement course is equivalent to an intermediate level college course in advanced Spanish composition and conversation, conducted entirely in Spanish. Students are required to take the AP Spanish Language & Culture exam at the end of the academic year. Admission requires the recommendation of the student's Spanish IV teacher and the approval of the department chair.
